The Lighthouse Students Becoming Knowledgeable Hikers!

The students of The Lighthouse School are on their way to becoming knowledgeable hikers! Earlier in the week the students learned how to identify some of the native plants of Ojai by taking a stroll through the Ojai Valley Land Conservancy’s Meadows Preserve next door to Nordhoff High School. Students then put their knowledge to the test by attempting to identify native plants on their hike up the Riverview Trail through the Ventura River Preserve. They also practiced their Social Thinking topics of the week: Following the Group Plan and Hidden Rules of the Hiking Trail such as “pack it in, pack it out,” “leave nature where you find it,” “stay on the trail to protect yourself and nature,” and “be aware when passing others on the trail”. These will continue to be topics of discussion throughout our Hiking Unit. Next week, we’re off to the Santa Barbara Botanical Gardens to learn more about plants native to California!
