Our educational therapy team provides a variety of services to students who experience learning challenges. This includes students who are struggling to keep up in a certain subject, experience difficulties with attention and organization, or need additional challenges in areas of strength, as well as students who may meet criteria for or have a formal diagnosis of a learning disability, language disorder, ADHD, developmental delay, or other special needs. Along with evaluations, educational therapy, tutoring, and homeschool support, we provide referrals to local specialists who offer assessment and intervention in the areas of need.
Academic Evaluation ($525 to $1475)
Most services begin with an initial assessment of skills. At Lighthouse, we offer different levels of evaluation, ranging in breadth. Our assessment process is designed to help us determine a student’s needs and the results lead to specific programming recommendations. The goal of these recommendations is to support a student’s growth within his or her current educational setting, or to help families select the most appropriate learning environment. Therefore, the programming plan may include consultation with the student’s teacher on appropriate classroom instruction and accommodations, student participation in individual or small-group instruction, student participation in enrichment programs, parent training, school referrals, and/or evaluation and treatment with a specialist in another field.
Educational Therapy ($110 to $125/hr)
For most students, one-to-one educational therapy can provide impressive results in a brief period of time. A learning plan involving academic intervention should include a minimum of four or five sessions each week of one-to-one instruction in a specific area of weakness.
For students with severe discrepancies between aptitude and achievement or for students with weaknesses in multiple areas of functioning, up to twenty hours of individual instruction each week, using multiple programs, may be recommended. Instruction may take place online, in the student’s home, or at the student’s school.
Academic Support Sessions ($75 to $110/hr)
For students who possess grade-level skills but need support in managing their course load, require extra time and clarification in a particular school subject, or need support in completing an online course, we offer weekly tutoring sessions! Our instructors can support students in all standard subject areas, through high-school level courses, and we can refer your family to local tutors for instruction in specialty areas such as foreign languages and highly advanced math courses. In addition to school support, subject-area tutoring, and homework help, we offer test prep and enrichment, and we work with our students to develop essential study skills such as organization, time management, research skills, student-teacher communication, and self advocacy.
Homeschool Support ($18,900 to $28,350/year)
Our homeschool support programs assist families who benefit from including a private teacher as part of their homeschooling team. Whether your family needs an instructor to support a student with a learning challenge, to help busy parents, or to educate your children while your family travels, our homeschool instruction is provided by expert educators who possess a passion for teaching and learning! Homeschool instruction can include anywhere from 8 to 15 hours of weekly instruction in 2 to 4 subject areas (language arts, math, science, and social studies) and requires a commitment for the school year in exchange for significant discounts on our hourly rates!
Consultation & Training ($195/hr)
Professional consultation is available to families who would like for the student’s individual learning plan to be integrated with the school’s education plan. Consultation can include meetings with teachers and other professionals involved in the student’s education for the purposes of planning, training, and collaboration. Distance consultation can also be arranged for families who do not live locally and wish to have a tutor in their community trained in implementing our programming recommendations. Training, weekly session plans, materials, and weekly consultation with the tutor of your choice can be arranged through our office. Additionally, we offer informational and training workshops, throughout the year, in order to provide tools and strategies to parents and educators. Topics include parenting skills, accessing resources for struggling learners, understanding and addressing learning challenges, and differentiating instruction in the classroom.
Local Referrals (no charge)
Along with comprehensive educational assessment and individual or group intervention, further assessment and treatment with additional specialists may be recommended for some students, depending on their individual needs. As part of an individual learning plan we may refer a family to local practitioners, each of whom provides expert evaluation and therapeutic intervention in his or her field including psychology, neuropsychology, speech and language pathology, occupational therapy, educational therapy, developmental optometry, nutrition, and more. We may also refer a family to local private schools to address the educational environment for a student’s needs.
