Parenting a Challenging Child ~
By Wendy Elliott, MA, LCMHC

April 1, 2013

DSC_0348-2 2As the parent of a child who was diagnosed with a learning disability, I know all too well the frustrations and sense of being misunderstood by “ordinary parents.”  It is easy to feel alone and isolated in your struggles especially when you find yourself having conversations about your child with other parents who never have to deal with a kid who wants to climb on the roof, hang from the chandelier, light fires in the house or have a ball seeing how many things he can throw at any one given time.

As parents of kids who have learning, social and emotional challenges we need to connect, talk and support one another. We must not live in a vacuum just because our child is different and the “normal” approaches don’t work. Just because your child has a learning disability, there is not cause to believe your child cannot be successful in his or her adult life.

As a parent, it is important for you to know that there are a host of methods, resources and support systems available to help your child. There are tons of strategies out there. It’s a matter of finding which particular ones work for your individual child, what your child needs, and then putting those strategies into effect.

See Information About Wendy’s Parent Groups Here

By joining a parent support group you will have the opportunity to share your story in a safe and confidential environment with other parents who have similar concerns and issues. You will receive useful strategies and advice from a professional and you will walk away with greater hope and confidence in your ability to help identify and support your child’s innate strengths and talents.
