Lori J. Boehm is a Special Education Consultant who advocates for children with special needs. Lori received her B.S. in Child Development/Special Education from California State University, Fullerton. She received a certificate of completion in the Special Education Advocacy Training (SEAT) Project and has served as a board member of the Ventura County Autism Society. Lori has been involved in a number of public movements including testifying before several committees and subcommittees in the state capitol. She is a Disabilities Consultant for Tony Strickland in the 19th Senatorial District. In 2010, in honor of her years of successful advocacy and her influence in legislation affecting children with special needs, Lori was named Women of the Year for her state senate district.
From personal experience, Lori knows that raising a child with a disability is a very difficult and complex job! The mother of two, Lori’s son, Nicholas, was born three months premature with spastic quadriplegic Cerebral Palsy. Confronted with the very real special needs of her son, Lori had to learn firsthand how to steer through the maze of local, state and federal agencies in order to get Nicholas what he deserved- a chance, like any other child!
Now, Lori educates parents on how to exercise their rights and mentors them to become advocates for their children. Lori’s consultation and coaching provide breakthrough experiences that help parents shift their minds to the real challenge of understanding the complex educational system. She helps families negotiate the maze of governmental agencies in California, including the public school system, Regional Center, Department of Developmental Services, MediCal, and In-Home Supportive Services.
As part of our lecture series, Lori will be educating parents on how to advocate and access services for their children with special needs. This event will take place on Tuesday, January 8, from 6:30-8:00 p.m. at Lighthouse Learning Solutions – 530 W. Ojai Avenue, Suite 107.
