We had a lovely weekend in Cape Cod! I was so happy that our old friends, Camille and Andy, opened up their home to us for three nights.
After driving from Lunenburg, Nova Scotia to Bangor, Maine on Wednesday, we rolled in to Cape Cod on Thursday evening, which was Halloween. On the long drive, we’d been engaged in some discussion regarding potential Halloween costumes, which were limited given that we are living on the road at the moment. Fortunately, Camille and Andy came to the rescue! When we arrived on Thursday, just after dark, they had already pulled the costume bin from the attic. The girls jumped out of the vehicle and straight into a bin of wigs, dresses, hats, and various costume pieces and accessories. Within 30 minutes, we were dressed and ready to trick-or-treat in the neighborhood. It was a great way to start our weekend and I’m so grateful that the girls got to celebrate Halloween, even on the road.
After a night spent talking, laughing, and indulging in candy, we all got up a little late on Friday morning. We got up and out quickly in order to get some breakfast before our FaceTime meeting with Lighthouse students. We decided that we could not pass up an opportunity to eat a breakfast sandwich in Sandwich, Massachusetts. After a bit of a search, we found Beth’s Bakery and Cafe, where we enjoyed delicious sandwiches and wraps as well as some hot chocolate and pastries.
We then drove up to Plymouth to take a tour of Plimouth Plantation, which is an outdoor experiential museum where visitors can tour recreations of a Wampanoag home site and a 17th century English village. The staff at both sites are dressed in period clothing and recreate and explain the lives of the people who inhabited the area during the 1600s. We were able to share elements of both sites with the Lighthouse students via FaceTime.
After leaving Plimouth Plantation, we went to the waterfront area to view the Plymouth Rock monument and experience the “Should I Stay or Should I Go?” exhibit. This interactive exhibit takes visitors through historical experiences from the perspective of different types of passengers on the Mayflower, such as a mariner, a child, a church member, or an English adventurer searching for a better life. By the end, our family was divided, with half of us thinking we would have stayed in England and half thinking we would have joined the travelers to the new land. We finished our day with a stroll along the waterfront, and headed back to Cape Cod for dinner with our friends.
Saturday morning offered another beautiful, clear day. We had considered making the drive up to Boston, but Jon and I felt as though we would enjoy staying on Cape Cod to experience the area a bit more. After a delicious breakfast at Cape Cod Bagel Co., we hopped on our bikes and rode along the Shining Sea Bikeway about 3.5 miles down to Woods Hole. There, we enjoyed walking in the waterfront town and stopped for tea, juice, and treats at Pie in the Sky; we loved the cozy little bakery!
On the ride back, we stopped briefly at a rocky beach to enjoy the sun and admire numerous rocks and shells. We finished our ride tired and happy, and checked in with our friends to see what we could bring home for dinner. Simply Divine Pizza, on Main Street in Falmouth was recommended, so that’s where we headed. We were able to bring home pizza and salad fixings and, eventually, we all got to sit down together for a leisurely evening of conversation and relaxation. Knowing it was our last night in Cape Cod, it was hard to call it a night, so everyone stayed up far later than intended. We were glad to be able to “fall back” for daylight saving in the wee hours of the morning!
It was tough to leave our friends today; we had enjoyed our stay so much! Jon took the girls out to breakfast in order to get Mickie the waffles and hash browns she was craving. I was supposed to be getting us packed up while they were gone, but it was much more fun sitting and talking to Camille and Andy! We finally got on the road around 3:00 this afternoon, and headed towards our next stop, Stamford, Connecticut. Here, we’re being provided lodging for two nights at the apartment of one of Jon’s old friends. We plan to take the train into Manhattan tomorrow morning for the girls’ first visit to New York!
