Nutritional and Dietary Approaches to Improve Attention and Focus

October 24, 2012

According to local Wholefood Nutritionist, Ayurveda Consultant and Herbalist, Khabir Southwick, many nutritional and dietary therapies can be implemented to eliminate or greatly reduce the symptoms of what are often referred to as attention deficit and hyperactivity disorders. Khabir states that, in many cases, these symptoms are due to nutritional deficiencies resulting from poor dietary habits and inadequate nutrition.

Khabir shared that the most common problem is a deficiency in essential fatty acids (good healthy oils) coupled with too much sugary food and simple carbs in the diet. Often he has recommended that parents give their children more oils and supplements every day while eliminating all foods with refined sugars. Khabir has seen the results of this recommendation alone help many children; however, he says other nutritional deficiencies are also key factors as are poor eating habits, which can result in poor digestion and thus mal-absorption of essential nutrients. Additionally, herbal teas and formulas can be very effective for both adults and children in improving concentration and focus.

Khabir advises that the parent and child meet with him for a complete health and nutritional needs assessment so that there is no guessing on the part of the parent. He can then educate parents about the nutritional and dietary needs of their child.

As part of our lecture series, Khabir will be speaking on this topic Tuesday, December 4, from 7:00-8:00 p.m. with Q & A at 8:00 p.m.
