One of the truly fun things we get to do here as part of the Lighthouse Learning School Program is take field trips! Last week we took our school students to the Santa Barbara Zoo. Not only did we hope they’d have fun, but we wanted to further their knowledge of different animals and their habitats.
Before our zoo field trip we spent time in our classes reading about the different animals you can find at the Santa Barbara Zoo. We also decided which animals the students wanted to make sure they saw during our visit. We mapped out our route around the zoo to make sure we didn’t miss a thing!
When we arrived at the zoo our students explored the world of big cats, giant, colorful birds, and exotic mammals from Africa. The students were able to get an up-close-and-personal look at many of the animals they had studied during the week.
We have been learning Spanish this semester, so the students were able to incorporate their new Spanish animal vocabulary as well!
With such a successful first outing of the year, there are sure to be more field trips and fun to come!
